Vanjaram Meen Kuzhambu | Vanjaram Fish Curry

Vanjaram Meen Kuzhambu, today we will see how to prepare vanjaram fish curry using freshly ground masala. I have already shared many versions of fish curry recipes.

You can either add raw fish or fried fish in the curry. I always like to add fried fish in my curry. Raw mango in the recipe can be substituted with tamarind water. The curry goes very well with rice, roti, dosa or idli. This is creamy and full of flavour.

We are roasting onion, coconut bits and curry leaves. Grind it together with curry powder / coriander powder, pepper powder and ginger garlic paste to nice creamy paste. The flavour of the whole dish comes form this masala paste.

Vanjaram Meen Kuzhambu | Vanjaram Fish Curry

Ingredients

  • 6-7 vanjaram fish fillets
  • 1 cup finely chopped onion
  • 1/2 cup chopped tomato
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • 1/2 cup chopped coconut bits
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  • salt to taste
  • 1 tbsp ginger garlic paste
  • 1 tsp pepper powder
  • 2 tsp sambar powder
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 2 tsp curry powder / coriander powder
  • 1 tsp Garam Masala
  • 1/4 cup chopped raw mango cubes
  • 1 stick curry leaves
  • 1 tbsp chopped coriander

Instructions

  • Marinate fish with turmeric powder and salt. Keep aside for 10 mins. Heat a tava and shallow fry fish fillets until 3/4 th cooked. Keep aside.
  • Heat 1 tbsp coconut oil in a pan. Temper mustard seeds, curry leaves and cumin seeds. Add 1/2 cup chopped onion and coconut bits. Cook for 2 mins and remove from the flame. Let it cool down completely.
  • Transfer to a mixie jar. Add ginger garlic paste, curry powder and pepper powder. Grind everything to nice creamy paste adding enough water. Keep aside. Heat oil in a clay pot or pan. Temper mustard seeds. Add chopped onions and saute a while.
  • Add chopped tomatoes and mash the pulp. Now add chopped raw mango cubes and stir well. Add ground paste, turmeric powder, sambar powder, garam masala and salt to taste.
  • Mix well everything. Now add 1 or 2 cup water and cook covered for 10 mins. Add fried fish fillets, lemon juice and cook for another 5-8 mins. Garnish with chopped coriander and serve with rice or roti.
